DIY Nursing Tank Top

This is probably the best thing EVER. Cheap, easy, fast (stop thinking what you're thinking, this is a PG blog!), and my favorite...uber practical! As all you mamas or mamas-to-be know, maternity clothes can be expensive, and nursing gear is no exception. Who wants to spend $30 on a single nursing tank top on top of nursing bras and shirts!? Not me said I! The solution? Use what you already have in your closet + a little needle & thread, and voila! Custom-made nursing tank top that can be used with almost any nursing bra that you already own.

Never sewn anything before? Fret not, I've included a step-by-step video that shows you how to knot off your stitches and secure everything :)

On to the tutorial!

Skill level: Easy
Time required: approximately 10 minutes
Cost: $0 - $10 (free for me because I already existing tank tops I could use)

Supplies I used:

  • Spaghetti strap tank top
  • Scissors
  • Seam ripper (optional)
  • Needle & thread in coordinating color of your tank top

Let's get started!
  • Start by cutting your spaghetti strap. There are 2 ways to do this.
    • Make sure you leave at least 2 inches of the front strap to form the loop, and use your seam ripper to un-stitch the back part of the spaghetti strap attached to the tank top. This makes for a little more work but leaves a cleaner finished product.
    • Cut the back side of the spaghetti strap close to the  tank top, no need to un-stitch.
  • Now in the front of the shirt, make a loop with the strap (you may want to have your nursing bra handy so you know how big to make the loop). Make the loop a bit snug so when you pull the loop over your bra hook, the loop won't fall off. The loop should look like the one below so the top portion will lay flat when it's looped around your bra hook.

  • Once your loop is formed, all you need to do is sew it to the tank top! I use just a regular needle and thread and stitch around a bunch of times to reinforce everything, but you could use a thicker needle and double-thread to help reinforce. After sewing on, cut off the remainder of the strap and repeat on the other strap.

  • Put your nursing bra on, then your tank, then un-clip your bra and pull the loops over bottom hook of your bra and BAM! $5 nursing tank top! I just saved you $20, you're welcome ;)
  • Below is a step-by-step video for all you visual learners.

Happy nursing!
